Amazon Forms Counterfeit Crimes Unit To Fight Bootlegs
Bootlegs are always a problem for online retailers, and few have measures that are effective at fighting them. Amazon is taking another shot at the effort, which what is called the Counterfeit Crimes Unit. It sounds like the company is bringing in legal experts for this endeavour, and as it turns out, that’s actually the case.
According to its press release, this team consists of former federal prosecutors, investigators and data analysts from around the world. The team will allow Amazon to more effectively take legal action against counterfeiters, as well as work with other brands and law enforcement officials to fight against them.
The objective here is so that no counterfeit item will ever be listed in its store. A bold proclamation, to be sure, but it remains to be seen if it will be something that’s achievable.
Of course, this isn’t the company’s first effort in fighting fakes on its stores. Last year, Amazon says it spent over US$500 million in fighting counterfeits with the help of over 8000 employees. The company also claims to have blocked over 6 billion suspected bad listings before they made a sale. With the new effort, the company is also urging governments to give its Counterfeit Crimes Unit access to the tools, funding and other resources it needs to do the job.
