Tokyo Game Show 2020 To Become Online Event Due To COVID-19 Pandemic
This year’s Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2020 has officially been cancelled, and there’s no prize in guessing why that is. The annual video game expo is the latest event to fall victim to the current COVID-19 pandemic and was expected to take place from 24 to 27 September.
Instead, the show’s planning committee will be shifting the event’s format from being a physical event to an online event instead. How it intends to pull this off, however, remains to be seen.
It goes without saying that TGS 2020 is the latest victim to fall prey to the widespread pandemic. Prior to this, both E3 2020 and Gamescom 2020 were the first two to announce their cancellations earlier for the exact same reason. Suffice to say, had the planning committee of TGS decided to soldier on with a live event, the backlash from both the local and international gaming community would’ve been catastrophic.
On another note, the game show is also been the last chance for gamers to perhaps get a glimpse of Sony’s next-gen PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X consoles. Both of which are expected to go up for sale during the holiday season later this year. As it stands, all Sony has shared about its console are its logo and specifications.
It also goes without saying that TGS 2020 would’ve been the last chance for video game developers to give gamers new – if not final – glimpses of soon-to-be-released titles, along with its other work-in-progress titles.
