Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2 Could Ship Out With Triple-Camera Module

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has effectively been on the market for a couple of months now, albeit to moderate reviews and initial impressions. While a successor to brand’s second foldable device still remains a pipe dream, a recent patent discovery suggests that it could sport a triple-camera main array.

The patent was reportedly filed by Samsung Mobile Inc with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) back in January. According to LetsGoDigital, the two patents share similar designs, both of them sporting clamshell design with a triple-camera main array on their rears. What sets them apart is the orientation of said main cameras; one patent shows the module lined up horizontally, while the other is vertically aligned.

The latter patent alignment wouldn’t be the first time Samsung has adopted the design; as it stands, the main triple-camera module on its Galaxy Note 10 series implements a similar design, as does the Galaxy S20 series. Also, compared to the horizontal option, having a camera aligned vertically and along the length of the phone means more room for a cover display. That could be bigger than the one in use on the current Galaxy Z Flip.

Like all patents, however, there’s a possibility that these triple-camera designs may not even become a reality and simply remain a concept. On top of that, having a third camera sensor installed doesn’t necessarily equate to better camera performance; nostalgic as the clamshell design is, DxOMark gave the camera performance of the Galaxy Z Flip a score of just 105 points, citing that its 12MP main shooter wasn’t quite up to par to the current generation of flagship smartphones.

On that note, take this news with a large grain of salt.
