CMCO: Cars To Only Carry 4 Household Members; Public Transport Passenger Capacity Halved

Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced earlier today that the government will allow a maximum of four individuals in a car during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) starting on 4 May 2020. However, he added that the driver and passengers must be from the same household.

The minister stated that there are no issues maintaining social distancing for those from the same house as they are staying together. He also warned the public to not take advantage of this to transport friends and others who are not part of their household, and strict actions will be taken against those who defy the current standard operating procedure (SOP).

Additionally, Ismail Sabri also said that all public transport would be allowed full resumption of operations on 4 May, but they are also required to adhere to the SOP. Therefore, all forms of public transportation are only limited to transport only half of their capacity in order to maintain social distancing, he added.

“To ensure social distancing is in place, we limit the capacity of the public transport to half. For example, if a bus is capable of ferrying 40 passengers, it means that only 20 passengers will be allowed to be on that bus at any one time,” he explained. “The same policy applies to LRT and MRT, each coach should see half of the capacity being occupied during the CMCO period.” 

The Conditional MCO period will begin tomorrow across the whole country, with a number of businesses and economic sectors reopening after over a month under restrictive movement. However, certain states including Sarawak, Sabah, and Kelantan have decided to not implement the new conditions on that date until further studies are made.
