Opensignal: Malaysia 4G Download Speed Drops to 8.8 Mbps During First Two Weeks of MCO

The mobile network analytics specialist, Opensignal this week has released a new report that focused on mobile experience during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Given that the company has released quite a number of reports covering our country before, the new global report has also included Malaysia as part of its research.

Covering the first two week of Movement Control Order (MCO) period, from 16 March until 29 March, Malaysia’s 4G download speed hovers around the 13 Mbps mark in the weeks leading to MCO. It then dropped to 10.1 Mbps in the first week of MCO.

In the second week, Opensignal recorded further decline in the download speed to 8.8 Mbps. That’s a total drop of 4.5 Mbps or around 34% in terms of performance.

However, since Malaysia’s average 4G download speed is already not that great to begin with prior to MCO at under 14 Mbps, the decrease in performance looked more significant for mobile services.

Aside from increase usage by consumers, it goes without saying that the free 1GB daily quota for MCO from telcos could be a contributing factor as well. Well, let’s hope the performance of our mobile network will not drop further until the MCO is over.
