Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Confirmed; Will Take Place In The Viking Age
Earlier last night, Ubisoft hosted a livestream on YouTube in collaboration with Australian digital artist, BossLogic, to slowly reveal the next Assassin’s Creed title. Eight long and painstaking hours later, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was made official.
If the title didn’t already make it obvious, the next instalment in the Assassin’s Creed universe will be focused in the Norse realm and Vikings. Judging from BossLogic’s finish artwork, it also looks like the game’s main protagonist will be a beardy Viking Assassin. Who wields an axe branded with a runic-themed Assassin’s emblem.
Details about Valhalla’s storyline are still sparse, but the end of the livestream did confirm that Ubisoft will follow up with an official trailer later today at 11PM. Considering that the game will be take place in the Viking age, it’s safe to say that the timeline of the new Assassin’s Creed will be focused on a major event. Sometime between eight and 11th century, meaning just before the events of the first Assassin’s Creed.
Ubisoft’s last title in the series was Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which was released back in 2018 and took place in Ancient Greece and was equally steeped in Greek mythology. The game also marked the second time Ubisoft broke off from its usual habit of releasing a new Assassin’s Creed title annually. Choosing instead to focus on Odyssey in the form of DLCs and updates to game’s world.
It’s an open secret that Ubisoft likely drew inspiration for Odyssey’s action RPG gameplay and mechanics from CD Projekt Red’s (CDPR) 2015 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Where Valhalla’s combat mechanics will draw inspiration from is, again, still a mystery. That said, some of us are hoping that the game will see a return of stealth, naval exploration, and hopefully, the iconic Hidden Blade.
