Windows 7 Official Support Ends Today

Back in March last year, Microsoft announced that it will be ending support for Windows 7. If you are still using that operating system, then you’ll have seen a popup from time to time, reminding you of the support ending one day. That day is today, 14 January 2020.

This means that after today, there will be no more technical support, software or even security updates. Continuing to run Windows 7 will mean leaving your system vulnerable to new security threats.

As before, Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10 as soon as you can. And for good reason, considering that the new OS is immune to vulnerabilities that affect older ones.

Windows 7 is still a very popular OS, at least when judged based on number of users. If the WannaCry attack from 2017 tells us anything, most of them are systems used by businesses. These are also usually a lot slower when it comes to upgrading their workmachines’ operating systems, compared to individual users.

For the rest of us, if for whatever reason you still intend to keep a PC running Windows 7, the only way you can keep it safe is to keep it disconnected from the internet.
