Star Wars Finally Answers How Luke’s Lightsaber Ended Up With Maz Kanata

Most of our nerdy mouths opened wide in shock when Rey discovers Luke Skywalker’s blue lightsaber in Maz Kanata’s basement in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. After all, the lightsaber was thought to be gone for good when Darth Vader sliced Luke’s hand in Empire Strikes Back and the lightsaber dropped down the huge tunnel in Cloud City. When we meet Luke again in Return of the Jedi, he has a brand new green lightsaber. So how on earth did Luke’s blue lightsaber end up in the hands of wise old Maz Kanata? When Rey asks her where she got it from, Maz simply says “a story for another time.”

Well, it looks like we finally have some answers courtesy of the Star Wars #2 from Marvel Comics (via ComicBook.com). The comic picks up immediately where Empire Strikes Back left off. It’s revealed that someone — a hooded figure to be specific — caught the lightsaber as it was falling down.

Lando tells Luke that he knows Cloud City in and out and can help Luke find his lightsaber. Then we see images of the lightsaber falling until it is caught by a hooded figure who says, “Skywalker, follow your destiny.”

The comic series has not revealed who exactly the hooded figure is. We’ll have to wait for Star Wars #3 to find that out. However, there is a very good chance that the hooded figure is none other than Maz Kanata.
