Morbius Trailer: Wait! Is this Film Connected to the MCU?

Sony just dropped the first trailer of Morbius and while it was undoubtedly intriguing, it also left me feeling a little confused (which I’ll get to later). Morbius centres around a biochemist Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) who’s suffering from a rare blood disease. In an effort to cure himself using unorthodox and unsanctioned methods, he accidentally turns himself into a type of vampire.

While the trailer was pretty cool, I’ll be reminding myself in the months to come not to get overhyped for it as nobody working behind the scenes is particularly exciting. It’s directed by Daniel Espinosa, who helmed the above-average entertainer, Life, and is written by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless, both of whom penned Gods of Egypt and Power Rangers.

Check out the trailer below:

Now that you’ve watched the trailer, let’s talk about what’s confusing about it. For starters, Morbius isn’t a Marvel Studios film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film the same way Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home is, rather it’s purely a Sony production in the same vein as Venom. Yet, the film makes a couple of references to Spider-Man — at one point, we even see a graffiti of the web-slinger on one of the walls at the side of the street.

The bigger head-scratcher is the inclusion of Michael Keaton, who casually drops “What’s up, doc?” to Morbius at the end of the trailer. That seems to indicate the return of Keaton’s Vulture who was last seen in prison at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Does this mean that Sony is slowly but surely putting together ‘Sinister Six’? One can hope.

However, for those who are hoping that we’ll get to see Morbius make an appearance alongside other MCU characters like Black Panther and Doctor Strange, don’t hold your breath, especially since Spider-Man himself will be leaving the MCU after one more solo film. Soon, Sony will have their own fully-fledged Spider-Man universe that’s separate from the MCU.

Morbius is set to release in cinemas 30 July 2020.
