MCMC To Reassess 2300MHz and 2600MHz Spectrum Bands In 2021

In addition to announcing the pioneer 5G spectrum bands for Malaysia yesterday, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has also addressed two other bands that are being used for the current 4G technology which includes the 2300MHz and 2600MHz bands.

As stated in the final report (FR) of the spectrum bands allocation that the regulatory body published on 31 December 2019 [pdf], MCMC has decided that the existing arrangement for these two bands would remain for the time being. The next review of these bands will only take place in 2021 according to the regulatory body.

In the MCMC’s public inquiry (PI) document that was published back in July [pdf], here is how the current spectrum holding looks like:

MCMC has also noted in the same PI document that there is a spectrum sharing arrangement between YTL and Asiaspace within the 2300MHz bands. For the 2600MHz bands, there are also such arrangements between Celcom, Digi, and Altel as well as Maxis and Redtone.

MCMC has noted in the FR that the reassessment on 2300MHz and 2600MHz spectrum in 2021 will be based on their ecosystem, utilization, and global trends. Not only that, MCMC is also looking into the maturity level of these bands in relation to the 5G technology which is expected to happen around the same time.
