Critics’ Choice Awards 2020: Joker, Parasite, 1917, Endgame Win

The 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards (my favourite of the awards season) has just wrapped up and unsurprisingly the winners’ list looks a little different from that of the Golden Globes. Surprisingly, the biggest award of the night — Best Picture — went to Once Upon a Time in HollywoodOUATIH is an enrapturing piece of cinema, but I expected Parasite to take the cake here considering the constant outpour of support the film has been getting from the critics even until now. Also, Roma‘s Best Picture win at the Critics Choice Awards last year proves that they’re far more open to giving International Films the big win than The Academy and the Hollywood Foreign Press.

The shared victories of Sam Mendes (1917) and Bong Joon-Ho (Parasitein the Best Director category puts a smile on my face. From a pure directorial perspective, no director in 2019 deserves the award more than these two who respectively told wonderful highly visual stories about survival and the class system. It’ll be interesting to see who wins it at the 2020 Academy Awards. I doubt there’s going to be a massive swerve in this category.

Once again, it baffles me that Rian Johnson’s Knives Out did not win Best Original Screenplay. Rian Johnson penned a fabulously twisty screenplay packed with incredibly funny dialogue and smart commentary on American politics and class structure. Then again, it’s difficult to argue against Tarantino winning in the screenplay category.

Joker won the same awards it won at the 2020 Golden Globes — Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Best Score (Hildur Guonadottir). Here’s to hoping they continue their streak right all the way to the Oscars.
