007 Producer Says James Bond Can Be Any Colour But Has to Be Male
With No Time to Die billed as Daniel Craig’s swan song as James Bond, film fans have already begun fantasy booking and speculating who the next Bond might be. Craig is my personal favourite Bond and has starred in what I think is the absolute best Bond film to date, Casino Royale. Given the times that we live in, it’s only natural for a lot of us to including women and people of colour in our fantasy bookings as well. I’ve been championing Idris Elba for the longest time.
Interestingly enough, James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has made it very clear that Bond can be of any colour but he has to be a man. In an interview with Variety, she said:
He can be of any color, but he is male. I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.
This makes perfect sense. Instead of taking the James Bond mantle and just giving it to a woman, it’ll be far more interesting a new character that happens to be female, with her own ticks and flaws, take up the 007 mantle. In fact, this sort of puts a piece of news we wrote about all the way back in July, into perspective. A source told Daily Mail: “There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says ‘Come in 007’, and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman.” Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) is part of the No Time to Die cast, playing a character named Nomi.
No Time to Die official synopsis:
Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help.
No Time to Die stars Daniel Craig and is set to release in Malaysian cinemas on 9 April 2020.
