Wonder Woman 1984 Trailer and Why the Film is Set in the 80s

Wonder Woman is back, but this time she isn’t kicking ass at No Man’s Land during the 1910s World War I. It’s the 1980s now — specifically 1984 — an era defined by large and funky hairstyles, musicians like Madonna and Michael Jackson, and the Cold War. Wonder Woman’s next big-screen adventure finds her facing two all-new foes: Max Lord and The Cheetah.

The film is once again directed by Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal. The film is directed from a screenplay by Patty Jenkins, Geoff Johns and David Callaham (Zombieland: Double Tap).

During a recent live stream (via Collider), Patty Jenkins was asked if it was a challenge to connect the time period of the first Wonder Woman film with Wonder Woman 1984. To which Jenkins replied:

It wasn’t a challenge to connect them because the first movie was its own story and this is very much its own story and it tells a perfect progression of Diana even thought it’s in such a different period of time.

The more interesting question posed towards Jenkins, though, is why she chose the film to be set in the 1980s specifically. While Patty Jenkins didn’t provide any details that would spoil the story, she did explain her thought process:

Why 1984? We wanted to bring Diana into the modern world. But the ’80s is a period that Wonder Woman is quite synonymous with. So it was great to see her there. But most importantly, it’s sort of the height of Western civilization and the success of the world that we all live in in the aftermath of now. So, I was curious to collide our Wonder Woman into the height of our current modern belief system and what kind of villains come out of that and see what happens. So, it all came quite naturally.

Wonder Woman 1984 is set to hit the big screen on 4 June 2020.
