Police Will Kill Drones Flown By Private Individuals During New Year’s Eve Celebration

The Culture, Arts and Tourism Ministry will have drones performing a light show at Dataran Merdeka tomorrow. This is part of the New Year’s Eve celebrations. And with that, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said that action will be taken against individuals who fly them during the celebration.

According to Bernama, Mazlan also said as a reminder that flying them without prior approval is illegal. And with the New Year’s Eve’s celebration, there’s the possibility of private drones colliding with those being flown by the authorities. Other safety concerned were also voiced, such as drones falling on people.

Mazlan said that “a special police team will use a special device to jam or kill any drones flown by any individual in the area”. This is likely referring to the Orion series of anti-drone guns made by Singaporean company TRD. Depending on the exact model, they have effective ranges of between one to two kilometres.

The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) have taken down drones that were flying without prior approval a number of times before. One such time was during the semi-final match for Piala Malaysia between Selangor and JDT in Stadium Shah Alam. You can find out more about that via the link above.
