Norman KRU: Censorship No Longer Relevant, We Should Move To Rating System

A recent remark made by the CEO of FINAS, Ahmad Idham regarding the need to regulate content from digital providers such as Netflix has caused quite a commotion. Interesting enough, another prominent individual within the local entertainment industry has provided his take on the issue.

Norman Abdul Halim, the co-founder of the legendary Malay group KRU who has since grown itself into an entertainment giant through KRU Studios, has stated that censorship is no longer relevant in the era of global content distribution.

One of KRU Studios’ film, Vikingdom actually made it to Netflix a few years ago.

In the report by The Star, Norman also pointed out that the current censorship policy for cinema releases which involves the Film Censorship Board (LPF), should be transformed into the rating system. Since the system would reveal the nature of the content, viewers would then be fully aware of what they about to watch.

Norman has also suggested that the rating system should be implemented for digital content providers as well. As for FINAS itself, he believes that the agency should instead help create tax incentives that could attract investors to provide more financial support for Malaysian-made content so that local production companies could compete at the global stage.
