Anthem Is Getting A Complete Overhaul; To Be Called Anthem 2.0 Or Anthem Next
Anthem, as a video game, is in a rough state to say the least. With developer Bioware experiencing a couple of high-profile departures, you’d think that publisher Electronic Arts (EA) is abandoning the game. But according to Kotaku, not only is the game not being abandoned, a major overhaul is being planned for Anthem.
That said, it seems that Bioware is not sure what the overhaul will look like just yet. One option is to release a series of updates the way No Man’s Sky did. Another is to release a substantial expansion like The Taken King for the first Destiny. There’s even a possibility, though unlikely, that Anthem Next will be a brand new, standalone game.
What is known, on the other hand, is that both Bioware studios – Edmonton and Austin – are working on plans to overhaul Anthem. One person on the project said that the developer spent “a few months tearing the game down and figuring what needed to change fundamentally”. This is then followed by a few more months of rebuilding.
Naturally, since even details of this overhaul have not been decided on, there’s no clear timeline for it just yet. But it’s still reassuring that EA has not commanded Bioware to abandon Anthem. The game has been panned by gamers for its combat loop and severe lack of content. It was also very broken at launch, to the extent of crashing PS4s. With the overhaul on the way, Anthem may finally be what fans were promised.
