Spider-Man and Venom Crossover Will Happen, Director Says

A lot has been said about the state of Spider-Man on the big screen over the past few months. Two months ago, we reported that Spider-Man would no longer be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Disney and Sony had reached a stalemate in their latest negotiations. However, a couple of weeks ago, Disney and Sony kissed and made up and now Spider-Man, as played by Tom Holland, will continue to be a part of the MCU, at the very least for one more film.

But what about the Spider-Manless Spider-verse that Sony is currently building? It was weird seeing a Venom movie without even a mention of Spider-Man. After all, in the comics Venom’s origin is intrinsically tied to the web-slinger. The financial success of Venom meant that we will be getting a sequel and the universe will continue to expand. But the idea always seemed confusing. What good is a universe built around the Spider-Man Rogues Gallery if Spider-Man himself is absent from it? Well, as it turns out, there are plans in the works for Spidey and Venom to collide down the line.

In an interview with FandomVenom helmer Ruben Fleischer had this to say:

“That’s where it’s all going to lead. And that’s the exciting thing, because we changed the origin of Venom … in the comics, he evolved from Spider-Man but because of the Marvel-Sony thing we weren’t able to that. And so the thing I think it’s building towards, and will be exciting to see, is when they actually do confront each other.”

While it’s still unclear how exactly the universes are going to collide, the idea is still mighty exciting. However, do note that Fleischer’s words aren’t confirmation of any sort, especially since he isn’t directing Venom 2 — Andy Serkis has taken over the captain’s chair. Also, with Sony’s renewed deal with the Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige once again serving as the creative head of at least one more solo Spidey movie, it’s unlikely that a crossover happens anytime soon.

That said, Kevin Feige previously teased the possibility of Spider-Man appearing in the Venom-verse as well. In an interview with Variety, he said:

“(Spider-Man) happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
