Game of Thrones Showrunners’ Star Wars Trilogy Was Going To Explore Jedi Origins

10 years ago, nobody knew of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The duo had nothing much of note on their resumes. David Benioff had co-written a couple of films including X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Troy, while D.B Weiss had penned a single episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But call it destiny, fate or simply being in the right place at the right time, one day the duo decided to set up a meeting with one George R.R. Martin to discuss adapting his (at the time) relatively unknown books into a TV series.

I’m of course talking about Game of Thrones, a series that would go on to be one of the most culturally relevant pieces of entertainment of the 21st Century and transform Benioff and Weiss into one of the hottest commodities in Hollywood. When it was announced last year that the duo was going to venture into the galaxy far far away to make a Star Wars trilogy, the internet lost their collective sh–.

Star Wars Benioff and Weiss

However, yesterday, in a shocking turn of events, Benioff and Weiss announced that they would be exiting the Star Wars universe. In a joint statement, they said: ““There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.” It’s borderline impossible to find any details about what their Star Wars trilogy was going to be about. Most people speculated that they would be making a Lord of the Rings-style Star Wars movie set in the Old Republic. However, that wasn’t confirmed.

But it looks like Variety has managed to dig out some information. Per their article:

Benioff and Weiss had ambitious plans to take the “Star Wars” universe in a new direction, one that would exist apart from the Skywalker family saga that comprised the franchise’s centrepiece nine-film series. The “Star Wars” period the pair was interested in exploring was how the Jedi came to exist.

Benioff and Weiss had reportedly been working on a treatment since signing a deal with Lucasfilm back in 2018. Apparently, they were planning to write at least one of the three movies themselves. Other than that, we don’t really know anything else about their planned trilogy.

The duo walked away from Star Wars to focus on their Netflix projects.
