Essential Products Teases New Phone Called GEM; Features Half The Width Of Standard Phone Size
There’s no denying that, very small variations aside, most of the smartphones of today have the same look. Essential Products looks to be working on one that will definitely shake things up where looks are concerned. It’s referred to simply as the GEM.
The revelation came from tweets by both the company’s official account, and that of CEO Andy Rubin. The former was pretty simple, showcasing the phone’s form factor, while the second demonstrated the Colorshift material of the device’s exterior. Both make it clear that this new device looks very different compared to the original Essential Phone.

From what was revealed, the Essential GEM looks like a run-of-the-mill phone vertically cut in half. Because of the halved width, it sports a significantly different UI as well. One shows multiple app windows in a single screen, while another shows an unspecified map app adjusted to fit the slim form factor. The device also sports a small punch hole camera on the top left corner of the display.
For now, there’s no release date for the Essential GEM, assuming that’s what the company decides to call it. But considering that the company is showing the device off, an official announcement may not be that long a wait away.
