DC’s Birds of Prey is a Feminist Film According to Ewan McGregor

The first wave of DCEU films is a mixed bag. Man of Steel is polarizing, I enjoyed Batman V Superman but it’s critically panned, Suicide Squad gets worse with each viewing, Wonder Woman is awesome and Justice League is a film that works only because of its cast of characters. However, post-Justice League, things are looking far brighter. The DCEU seems to have found its footing — both Aquaman and Shazam are highly entertaining films and I think we can all expect Wonder Woman 1984 to be as good or better than the first film. Suicide Squad is getting a soft reboot, this time helmed by the creative mind behind Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn and we’ll be getting Birds of Prey helmed by a wildcard in Cathy Yan.

The trailer for Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn dropped recently to much fanfare. It was fun, sexy and absolutely badass. What’s interesting, but perhaps not so surprising is that it’s a feminist film. In an interview with Premiere Magazine (Via ComicBook.com), Ewan McGregor who plays the villainous Black Mask talked about the film’s feminist themes.

“What interested me with Birds of Prey is that it’s a feminist film. It is very finely written. There is in the script a real look on misogyny, and I think we need that. We need to be more aware of how we behave with the opposite sex. We need to be taught to change. Misogynists in movies are often extreme: they rape, they beat women … and it is legitimate to represent people like that, because they exist and they are obviously the worst. But in the Birds of Prey dialogues, there is always a hint of everyday misogyny, of those things you say as a man you do not even realize, mansplaining … and it’s in the script in a very subtle way. I found that brilliant.”
