Facebook Horizon Is A Massive Multiplayer Social VR World; Beta Opens In 2020
Facebook recently announced a massive multiplayer virtual reality (VR) world called Horizon. The world is a sandbox universe developed by Oculus, and players can build within the environment, interact with each other, and explore the world generated by other users.
Similar to the Ready Player One Oasis movie concept, players in Horizon can design their own avatars and travel between different virtual places through portals called Telepods. Within the app itself, there will also be multiplayer games and movies for players to enjoy together.
From there, players can hop on to the Horizon World Builder to create their own world from scratch, from making a vacation spot to ring arenas.
When things happen on the Internet, from time to time you will be encountering with trolls. For users who still aren’t clear about Horizon’s guidelines, Facebook will layout the world’s safety on its “Citizenship” page where it explains that it is everyone’s responsibility to create a culture that is respectful and comfortable.
In a case of harassment, players also have the option to mute, block and report the person. However, players can also jump into their own private space in Horizon when things get out of control by pressing a shield button.
Additionally, there is also be customer supports called Horizon Locals to assists users with technical or safety issues. Horizon Locals will be roaming around the VR landscapes to monitor the world and users’ safety.
Though there are no exact launch dates announced for Horizon, Facebook is expected to open the world up in beta sometime in 2020. Currently, users can sign up for early access for the closed beta opening next year here.
