Another Spider-Man Spinoff With New Character is Developing at Sony

It looks like Sony’s Spider-Man universe is expanding. According to Collider, Sony Pictures has signed on screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless — two of whom penned the screenplay of another upcoming Sony comic book movie, Morbius — to write a Madame Web film set in the Spidey universe. When prodded for information, Sony Pictures declined to comment.

Who is Madame Web, you ask? Well, we had to do some digging ourselves. In the comics, Madame Web is often depicted as an elderly blind woman with psychic and telepathic abilities. She’s often seen as a clairvoyant in the same vein as Oracle from The Matrix. She also has a serious neuromuscular disease and is connected to a special life support system that looks like a Spider-Web. Throughout her various comic book arcs, Madame Web has interacted with various popular Marvel characters including Spider-Man, Jessica Jones and Electro.

It’s still unclear how all these characters will fit into Sony’s Spider-Man universe. Last year saw the release of Venom, starring Tom Hardy. The sequel to Venom, this time directed by Andy Serkis is currently in the works, along with Morbius starring Jared Leto. The Madame Web news comes at the heels of Sony Pictures’ internet-breaking contractual impasse with Marvel Studios over the use of the Spider-Man character. As of one month ago, Spider-Man will no longer be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which would leave a number of their storylines hanging.
