Toy Story 4 Early Reviews Are Super Positive; Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed

Malaysian film critics may not have seen Toy Story 4 yet (our press screening is next week), but early reviews from critics in the US suggest another brilliant film in the franchise. Critics have called the film “touching,” “emotional” and “absolutely magical.” One critic has also put it down as a guaranteed Best Animated Feature Oscar winner — “Frozen 2 will have to let it go” says Jeff Sneider of Collider.

Initially, I was sceptical. After all, the Toy Story franchise wrapped up beautifully in Toy Story 3. I worried that the fourth instalment would be nothing more than a cash grab and that Disney/Pixar could potentially ruin the legacy of what has been a brilliantly written and conceptualized franchise. Hey! I guess we should never doubt the House of Mouse. I’m hyped!

Here are some of the Twitter reactions by US critics who managed to catch an early screening:

Well, we have the yr's first take-it-to-the-bank Oscar winner, & it's TOY STORY 4, which is excellent. EXCELLENT! Those who think FROZEN 2 still has a chance will have to "let it go." This is the best, most consistent, most rewarding film franchise, along with Mission: Impossible

The biggest problem with #ToyStory4 is that I probably missed 25% of the dialogue due to audience laughter. It's terrific entertainment that absolutely justifies itself. I will happily eat crow for ever assuming otherwise.

I adored #ToyStory4 on so many levels. Non-stop laughs, the animation is jaw-dropping, and it's an especially touching new chapter of the story. Walked away feeling super hopeful about the endless possibilities out there. (And yes, I love #Forky.)

Since the first batch of reviews in the US are out, naturally Rotten Tomatoes has compiled them. And… I’ll be dammed! Toy Story 4 has a whopping 100% on the popular aggregator site with an average critic rating of 8.5/10. The consensus:

Heartwarming, funny, and beautifully animated, Toy Story 4 manages the unlikely feat of extending — and perhaps concluding — a practically perfect animated saga.

Note that it’s still early and the score could very well change as more and more reviews are compiled.

Toy Story 4 official synopsis: 

Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.

Toy Story 4 bounces into Malaysian cinemas this 20 June 2019.
