Huawei Will Continue To Deliver Security Updates To Android Devices; Including HONOR Products

In response to Google seemingly cutting business ties with Huawei, the future of Huawei and HONOR phones looks to be a little uncertain, to say the least. Sources to Reuters claim that Android devices from the brand will no longer be getting Android updates. This is despite the fact that Google has guaranteed that existing Huawei devices will continue to be able to access Google Play and be protected by Google Play Protect.

Since then, the company has sent a follow-up statement, addressing the issue. The statement says that Huawei will continue to provide security updates to existing Huawei and HONOR devices. This encompasses phones as well as tablets.

Here’s the statement, reproduced in full:

Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry.

Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products covering those have been sold or still in stock globally.

We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally.

Google isn’t the only company to be cutting business ties with the Chinese company. Intel and Qualcomm have also done the same. The former will directly affect the production of Huawei’s servers and notebooks, while the latter will affect phones of both Huawei and HONOR devices not using the company’s own Hisilicon chipsets.

All in all, it’s still pretty unclear what the direct effect on consumers will be. And with Huawei reportedly still having three months worth of supplies, there’s not exactly much time for Huawei to consider its next step.
