Borderlands 3 To Microtransactions To Be Purely Cosmetic; Will Not Feature “Free To Play Junk”

If you intend on getting Borderlands 3, and not worried about its six-month Epic Games Store exclusivity, then you’re probably wondering if it has microtransactions instead. It looks like the answer is yes, the game will indeed have microtransactions, but in ways that are similar to Borderlands 2.

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford said the microtransactions will be “just as we did in Borderlands 2.” That said, Game Informer reports that he did say the game “won’t have microtransactions” during the actual live event, which caused a fair bit of confusion.

As I said at the live event, we will be working on big campaign DLC and will probably also offer additional cosmetics, just as we did with Borderlands 2. What will will NOT do is F2P style microtransactions – no premium currency, lootboxes, etc.

There’s also been a bit of back-and-forth between Pitchford and Andy McNamara, Game Informer’s Editor-In-Chief, over the words used too. It would be an interesting read if it wasn’t so fragmented, but the gist of it is regarding the meaning of the term “microtransactions” and its improper use during the live event.

For the uninformed, microtransactions are smaller purchases made for content within a major title. In this case, buying cosmetics for a game is considered a microtransaction. There are multiple types of microtransactions, including lootboxes, pay-to-win stat boosts, and the aforementioned cosmetics.
