Apple might be building its own version of Google’s Street View

Apple Maps

Starting sometime in May, Apple is sending out a fleet of vehicles to drive around Canada to gather data that it plans to use to improve Apple Maps.

The company shared a press release online on May 27th to let Canadians know what the company is doing.

It’s unclear if the company is gathering data to simply improve Apple Maps, if it’s trying to build a competitor to Google’s Street View function, or if its creating 3D maps for autonomous vehicles.

It seems likely that it’s one of the former since the press release says that the company is using the data “to make the most accurate and useful Maps experience possible,” and that it plans “to publish this data in a future product update.”

Another hint that makes it seem like a Street View competitor is that the company says “we will blur faces and license plates on collected images prior to publication,” according to a separate webpage detailing when and where the Apple Maps vehicles will be.
