VideoLAN Quietly Lifts Ban On Huawei Devices; Allows Users To Download VLC Player Again

VideoLAN, the company behind the popular VLC media player app, seems to have had a change of heart with Chinese smartphone brand, Huawei. The company is said to have lifted the ban that prohibited Huawei devices from downloading the app via Google Play Store, almost a year after the ban went into effect.

VideoLAN’s initial ban against Huawei’s phones was in response to the way the Chinese brand’s draconian method in handling background apps. Before this, Huawei devices would aggressively shut down any apps that aren’t from Huawei itself.

VLC was just one of many third-party apps that suffered from this execution; because of the aggressive shutdowns, many VLC users on Huawei smartphones reported the app’s audio background playback feature suffered as a result of the shutdown.

As mentioned earlier, the ban is no longer in effect, with VideoLAN saying that it had “quietly” lifted the ban months ago. After Huawei found a workaround the issue. To be precise, the smartphone maker simply transformed the background app shutdown feature into an “optional” feature, rather than a default setting.
