Intel Looking To Sell Smartphone Modem Business

Intel recently has announced that it is shutting down its 5G smartphone modem business. However, there is a possibility that all the work that the division has done will not go down the drain based on a recent report that claimed Intel is looking for interested parties to purchase the entire modem chip business from the company.

In fact, the report by the Wall Street Journal stated that Apple was originally interested in acquiring parts of Intel’s smartphone modem business. The talk has since cooled down thought at around the same time that Apple and Qualcomm announced the end of their multi-year legal battle alongside a six-year partnership.

It’s also understandable why Intel is looking to let go of that part of the business. The report states that it costs Intel about US$1 billion (~RM4.13 billion) every year, according to WSJ’s sources.

Hence, it seems like a good move but then again, the company need to make it happen fast though. As pointed by Partick Moorhead, principal at Moor Insights & Strategy in the WSJ’s report, the value of the business depreciates with every second that goes by.
