Google Might Deliver All Future Android OS Updates Via Play Store
It seems like Google is working on changing how system updates are delivered to Android devices. According to a report by 9to5Google, discovery of several strings of code suggest that the new delivery method may involve using the Google Play Store.
Specifically, in version 14.5.52 of the Play Store, the tech news site discovered a few strings related to downloading and installing a “System Update”. The strings note that the interface elements are similar to the system update page on Pixel devices, which includes prompts to guide users through the update process.

Additionally, there are also strings for notifications detailing the update progress that includes phrases like “Downloading…”, “Installing…”, and “Almost there…”.

On another note, delivering updates through an app store isn’t something new. Apple already delivers system updates for Mac computers through its app store, which provides a more user-friendly experience. That said, Google often tests new features internally without ever releasing them to its users. In other words, there’s no guarantee that this method of updating will kick off, let alone be implemented.
