Possible PlayStation 5 Patent Details Backward Compatibility

With Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5 (PS5) rumoured to be announced in 2020, the company has a year still to work on the console. And indeed it has been working hard, as a patent was recently filed to the Japan Patent Office.

The patent is titled “CPUID for backward compatibility”, which says just about all one needs to know about it. Essentially, it’s for backwards compatibility for games of older generation consoles; a feature that the PS4 console is severely lacking.

Diving into the details, it describes the ability of the CPU in the new console to mimic the CPU of legacy devices. This allows games for previous generation consoles to run on the new one, thinking it’s still running with familiar hardware.

But as with all patents, we don’t know if it will be making its way to consumers. It’s undeniably great if it does, as you won’t need to keep using a previous generation console to run your favourite games from that period.
