TNB Construction Work Affects TM’s Cable In Cherating: May Have Disrupts Internet In Sabah and Sarawak

Another day, another cable cut incident. This time around, it happened at Cherating in Pahang and while this might sound rather odd, the incident might have affected users in East Malaysia even though the cable cut inside took place in West Malaysia.

According to the announcement made by TM on 3 Jan, the cable cut incident was caused by TNB’s construction work. The cable that was involved in the incident is apparently part of the submarine cable network that connects Sabah & Sarawak to TM’s central network.

While TM didn’t explicitly point it out in the announcement, the descriptions above seem to signify there is a likelihood that the incident might have caused some disruption to users in East Malaysia. Given the information above, we believe the submarine cable network that TM has mentioned in its announcement is the Sistem Kabel Rakyat 1Malaysia (SKR1M).

SKR1M

Aside from SKR1M, other networks that utilize Cherating as their landing points according to TeleGeography are the Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand Cable as well as the Bay to Bay Express Cable System which connects Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and the United States.

While TM has stated that the restoration process for the affected cable was expected to be completed on 4 January, the company has yet to provide any official update on it though. Nevertheless, if the said repair job has been done, the Internet experience for TM customers in Sabah and Sarawak should have returned to normal by now.
