Sphero’s Specdrums STEM-focussed Bluetooth ring music maker shipping January 15

Sphero recently announced that it will end its partnership with Disney for its licensed products, such as the Star Wars-themed toys like BB-8 and R2-D2.

Sphero stated this decision allows it to go back to its roots and focus on the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) sector. Following the release of the Sphero Bolt, a spherical robot with programmable LED lights, Sphero has unveiled its latest project at CES 2019 called Specdrums.

Boulder, Co-based Specdrums was acquired by Sphero in June of 2018 and is a STEM-based educational music startup. The company found success on Kickstarter and Sphero saw an opportunity to grow the brand.

Specdrums’ goal is to enable people to ‘create music anytime, anywhere and make the world your instrument.” The kit is app-enabled — iOS and Android — and comes with a ‘play pad’, ship with one or two rings that have a built-in accelerometer, light sensor, LEDs, and Bluetooth that gives the user the ability to capture various sounds, which can be combined to create music. The battery life on the play pad is reportedly 2 hours.

Sphero says it will begin shipping January 15 and comes with a price tag of $64.99 USD for one ring, or $99.99 USD for two rings.
