The Intellivision Amico Is A Family-Friendly Console; Slated For Release In 2020

Ever heard of the name Intellivision? Those who grew up in the age of the Atari 2600 may be familiar with the name. In a couple of years’ time though, there’s a chance that it will become a household name (yet again); the company has announced the Intellivision Amico to be released on 10 October 2020.

Intellivision’s CEO Tommy Tallarico, said that they “are creating a console that parents want to buy, not one that they were asked to buy.” So instead of catering to the hardcore gamers, the company aims to make the console one for gamers and non-gamers alike, where games are simple and straightforward, and don’t come with steep learning curves.

The company even got a reveal trailer for the console. It looks like it’s going to be a pretty small machine. But if anything, it’s very eye-catching. The ambient lighting is pretty significant too.

Two Bluetooth controllers sit docked on the console. They’re also pretty unorthodox ones – they consist of a simple rotating disc on the front, a colour touchscreen above that, and two buttons on each side, looking quite like thicker smartphones. They also vibrate, and come with their own microphone and speakers.

Up to eight controllers can be connected at a time. In addition to the two that will come with the console, an app will let smartphones act as additional controllers.

At launch, the console will have 48 games built in. They consist of original Intellivision titles, as well as some from Atari and Imagic. In addition, there will be over 20 games that can be bought separately from its own dedicated Online Store. Intellivision promises that all games will come with an ESRB rating of E or E10+, as well as not having any ‘costly’ DLC or microtransactions.

Since the Intellivision Amico is still two years away, even the company hasn’t finalised its price. That said, the company does have a range of US$149 – US$179 (~RM620 – ~RM744). Each game from the store will also have a price range of US$2.99 to US$7.99 (~RM12 – ~RM33).
