Massive Fitbit Charge 3 leak appears to have revealed all the key specs

We already had an inkling that a Fitbit Charge 3 was on the way, but now “reliable intel” appears to have given us a full breakdown of the features, and more pictures to examine.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first: no GPS, Android Authority reports. This is hardly a big surprise, given where the Fitbit Charge historically sits in the lineup, but it’s disappointing all the same. In short, it means you’re going to need your phone with you if you want accurate run or cycle tracking.

Otherwise, it’s all good. The first big improvement is a full touchscreen. While the Fitbit Charge 2 does have touch controls, they’re pretty limited, and involve awkward taps of the screen to slowly work your way through its functions.

While I have serious reservations about touchscreens on running watches (sweat and rain make them pretty flakey), it does open up a useful function previously reserved to Fitbit’s Versa and Ionic smartwatches. As the picture below shows, it looks like you’ll be able to reply to messages right from the wrist.

But that’s not the only feature it borrows from other Fitbits. Like the Fitbit Ionic, Fitbit Versa and Fitbit Flex 2, it’s swimproof up to 50 metres of depth. Not only does that mean you can track your swims,  but you no longer have to worry about taking it in the shower.

Finally, the Fitbit Charge 3 will apparently come in two flavours: one with NFC and one without. In practical terms, that means one will support contactless payments, and the other won’t – but there’s a catch here. The contactless payment in question is Fitbit Pay, and while that has plenty of banks onboard in the US, UK support is considerably more sparse, with just boon, Santander, Danske Bank and Starline Bank supported.

Right now, this is all just rumour and hearsay, but this certainly feels like where I’d expect the company to take the Charge 3. Given that the Charge 2 was unveiled at IFA 2016, and IFA 2018 is just a matter of weeks away, it may not be too long until we know for sure.
