Rumour: Qualcomm Snapdragon 1000 May Be New Heart Of ASUS ARM-based laptop

ASUS is supposedly working with Qualcomm on an ARM-based laptop based on an all-new Snapdragon 1000 chipset. The new chipset is said to be a new line of products and not related to any current SoCs in the market.

Using the codename ‘Primus’, the new ARM laptop is rumoured to be a high-end device for ASUS; in the same vein as the HP Envy X2 2-in-1. No other specifications have been shared thus far. It can be speculated that the new SoC will feature the new Cortex-A76 CPU cores, which promises “laptop-class” performance.

The report however states that the TDP of the ARM-based Snapdragon 1000 may go up to compete with x86-based Intel processors. Specifically, the TDP for the chip in Primus is said to be rated at 6.5 Watts, compared to the 5 Watts in the Snapdragon 845. This increase in power may result in the increase of processing efficiency. As a comparison, the Intel Core i7-7y75 has a max TDP of 7.5 watts.

ASUS has been working with Qualcomm on this project since the beginning of 2018 says the report. The company also aims to be the first to the market with the new Qualcomm SoC, which is expected to be sometime in 2019. We may see Primus unveiled at CES 2019, so stay tuned to find out.
