Microsoft Buys GitHub For $7.5 Billion In Stock

Microsoft has agreed to buy GitHub for $7.5 billion (RM30 billion) in Microsoft stock. The news comes after rumours suggested that Redmond was in talks to acquire the world’s most popular code repository; which sent developers scrambling to find an alternative.

GitHub will remain as an independent entity within Microsoft, and will not see its operations changed in any way. The official announcement also says that developers will be able to continue using “programming languages, tools and operating systems of their choice for their projects.”

Microsoft Corporate Vice President Nat Friedman will assume the role of GitHub CEO. Filling a role that has been left empty for the last ten months at the company. Friedman was the founder of Xamarin, a company that specialised in deploying code across multiple platforms.

The sale is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
