GrabPay Officially Launched In Malaysia With 500 Merchants

Grab has officially launched GrabPay in Malaysia. The e-wallet was activated for use with Grab’s own ride sharing service last month, but it now available for use with over 500 merchants across the country.

Partners is eight major Malaysian cities will be allowing customers to pay with GrabPay, although most of these are currently focused on the food and beverage sector. Covering popular outliets like Tealive, TeoChew Cendol, KGB Burgers, Kopi Ping, and Coffee Gallery.

That in mind, Grab intends to double the number of merchants accepting GrabPay within the next few months.

While GrabPay operates using the same QR code payment system as other e-wallets in Malaysia, there are a couple of small differences. For one, Grab has a strategic partnership with Maybank that will soon see GrabPay and Maybank QR Pay become interchangeable.

The other is that GrabPay can also be used in other countries in Southeast Asia. Although this comes with a caveat in that the app is not capable of converting currencies. Meaning that Malaysians who want to use GrabPay in Singapore will have to also add Singaporean Dollars to the e-wallet separately.

GrabPay also works with the GrabRewards system, earning additional loyalty points for spending through Grab’s ecosystem. Something that the company is more than eager to encourage users to participate in.
