Google Maps Updates Introduces New Way To Explore Your Surroundings

Google has pushed an update for Google Maps that makes it easier to find interesting things do. The redesigned Explore tab expands the number of available options, and now surfaces more places of interest around the user; complete with recommendations for restaurants.

All location information is sourced from the Local Guides programme. A project that has Google Maps users contribute information about their local areas. Including information provided by Malaysian teams who provide information about things to do and places to eat. Making Google’s recommendations closer to local tastes.

The Explore tab will also show events and activities happening in the area. All of which can be filtered by categories like “kids” or “cheap”. Over time, Google’s algorithms will also learn about each user’s preferences and adjust the recommendations according to their past activities. These recommendations also extend to food preferences based on location and search history.

Finally, Google Maps is able to automatically keep track of a user’s progress on trending restaurants. Essentially keeping score on how many restaurants from recommended lists have been visited. Something that probably won’t be very useful for the average user, but perhaps more attractive for those who are on very specific food missions.
