Celcom Introduces SafeMate: A Connected Personal Panic Button

Celcom has recently introduced SafeMate, a highly portable device that is designed for use during emergencies. In general, it acts as a panic button that help users quickly reach out to emergency services and contacts when the need arises.

Based on our quick research, the SafeMate is basically a Celcom-branded React Mobile Sidekick which has been dubbed as the world’s smallest personal panic button. While React Mobile might be based in United States, it seems that the underlying service behind Celcom SafeMate is being done locally which is appropriate given the nature of the product.

The SafeMate works in hand with React Mobile safety app which helps keep track of users’ location. In fact, the app also comes with a function called Follow Me that users can utilize to inform their whereabouts in real-time to their close contacts.

When SafeMate is engaged, it will activated the Help Me mode on the app which will notify the 24/7 emergency call centre that in turn will call users to check on their situation. At the same time, it will also sent an alert that includes users’ location to the the emergency contact numbers that they have inside the Reach Mobile app.

The call center will also call these emergency numbers if they not able to reach you directly. Subsequently, it will then call 999 directly and provide them with your location if the listed emergency contacts are out of reach. If the Help Me mode was activated outside of Malaysia, the call center will then reach out and passed your location to the nearest Malaysian Embassy.

With the ability to stay connected within the distance of up to 100 feet, SafeMate has battery life of 1+ year and utilizes the commonly available CR2032 battery which can be replaced by users themselves. Price-wise, Celcom SafeMate costs RM 14.80 per month although it is currently being offered at RM 9.80 as part of its release promotion. Alongside upfront fee of RM 240, the device is also attached to a 12-month contract tenure.
