ARM Introduces Cortex-A76 CPU, Mali-G76 GPU And Mali-V76 VPU

ARM has introduced a slew of new cores for its licensees during its recent Techday . The Cortex-A76 CPU, Mali-G76 GPU And Mali-V76 VPU will be the new components for future ARM-based SoCs from companies such as Samsung and Huawei to name a few.

Based on the DynamIQ technology, the new Cortex-A76 CPU is promoted as a “laptop-class” CPU by ARM. Among the numbers promised by the company is a 35% improvement on performance when compared to last year’s A75 core, and a 40% reduction on power consumption. Built on the new 7nm manufacturing process, the A76 is set to blaze trails in performance in the mobile space.

Meanwhile the Mali-G76 GPU is the successor to last year’s Mali-G72 GPU core. ARM is promising the GPU will deliver 30% more efficiency and 30% more performance when compared to last year. The is the GPU used by companies such as Samsung, Huawei and Mediatek. We can expect better 3D performance from upcoming SoCs from these companies that is as equal or better than Qualcomm’s chips using the Adreno GPU.

Lastly the Mali-V76 VPU supports 8K decoding up to 60FPS or four 4K streams at 60FPS. ARM says that this allows devices with this video processing unit to both make video calls and record the stream in 4K. It also promises up to four 4K stream decoding at the same time, or up to 16 streams in Full HD for a 4×4 video wall.

The new cores will be available to partners sometime in late third quarter, and in new SoCs by 2019.
