Xiaomi Redmi S2 Official: Costs Only 999 Yuan, May Come to Malaysia

Xiaomi has quite a number of devices under the Redmi lineup, and the Chinese company just introduced a new phone to the series: the Xiaomi Redmi S2. As its name suggests, the Redmi S2 focuses on its selfie capability, and the phone is priced very competitively too.

Featuring a 16MP front-facing shooter, the Redmi S2 can take selfies with bokeh effects, thanks to the AI Portrait Mode. On top of that, the front camera also comes with an LED flash – an increasingly common feature for selfie-centric phones like the Redmi S2. Looking at sample images taken with the front snapper, the phone does seem to be pretty capable in this regard.

Aside from that, the Redmi S2 has a 5.99-inch 18:9 HD+ display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset paired with up to 4GB of RAM, two choices of internal storage (32GB or 64GB), a 3,080mAh battery, and MIUI 9 based on Android Oreo out of the box. Naturally, the S2 also has a dual-camera system made up of 12MP + 5MP sensors.

The Redmi S2 is a pretty compelling mid-range phone, and it’s affordable too: the 32GB model with 3GB of RAM retails at only 999 Chinese yuan (about RM620), while the 64GB variant with 4GB of RAM goes for 1,299 yuan (approximately RM810). Interestingly, the Redmi S2 has been registered with SIRIM too under the model number M1803E6G.

There’s a very good chance the Xiaomi Redmi S2 will be made available in Malaysia. Considering the fact that even the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is in SIRIM’s database, we may be looking at a simultaneous local launch for these two phones.
