Snap testing new export format for Snapchat Spectacles
One of the common gripes with Snapchat’s Spectacles accessory is its circular photo and video format, which converts to a small circle with a big white border when exported outside of the app.
Now, however, Snapchat has confirmed to TechCrunch it is testing a new export format for Spectacles that lets users choose a black border and horizontal 16:9 rectangular format instead.
The wider, edged style is a more natural fit for YouTube and other video players. The new format is currently being tested in the beta version of the Snapchat. It’s currently unclear when the feature will roll out to all users.
Spectacles were initially a cool fad when they were launched in the U.S. in September 2016, although they’ve since seem to wane in popularity. According to an October 2017 report, Snap still has hundreds of thousands of unsold Spectacles lying around.
Spectacles came to Canada that same month, and while Canadian sales numbers haven’t officially been revealed, they haven’t since seemed to make much of a splash here, either.
Snap released a second version of Spectacles in the U.S. at the end of April, although there’s no word on if those will come to Canada.
