Red, Lucid building 8K camera compatible with Hydrogen One phone

Red is partnering with a company called Lucid to build an 8K 3D prosumer camera compatible with it’s upcoming Hydrogen One phone.

Lucid, best known for its ultra-portable LucidCam system, will reportedly be using its 3D tech in the new Red camera.

The new camera will allegedly use Red’s hardware and camera design, while looking a typical Red camera. Additionally, the 8K camera will be compatible with the upcoming Hydrogen One phone.

The camera utilizes two synced 4K cameras that capture and convert images and video to 8K 4V, saved as .h4v files. The file type allegedly stands for Hydrogen 4-view and is a file type specific to the new Hydrogen One phone. Unlike typical 3D, which offers two (stereo) views, H4V content will provide four views, which likely has to do with the holographic screen the phone will sport.

A prototype of the new camera was reportedly shown off at a Hydrogen One event on May 19th.

The phone can be slotted into the camera to act as a display, according to Lucid CEO Han Jin. It will allow users to view the content immediately in 3D/4V without a headset.

Not much is known about the new Red phone, but it seems the company is already doubling down on the holographic display. The phone supposedly has a 3D effect that doesn’t require glasses. Red is already working on ways to use that technology in its cameras.

The phone will feature a 5.7 inch QHD display and will be powered by a Snapdragon 835. It’s also set to sport a 4,500 mAh battery, USB Type-C charging and headphone jack. The device should be available later this summer.
