HTC reveals its latest flagship smartphone, the U12+

HTC U12+

HTC has unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the HTC U12+.

The HTC U12+ is one of the only flagship Android announced this year that doesn’t feature an iPhone X-style notch.

What the phone does have is a 6-inch Super LCD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a 2,880 x 1,440 pixel resolution. The screen also supports HDR10 high-dynamic range video content.

Design-wise the handset features a glass back and front with an aluminum frame similar to the HTC U11. The HTC U12+’s bezels are definitely a lot smaller than the U11’s and similar to the U11+’s.

Further, the U12+’s fame is pressure sensitive similar to the HTC U11 and the HTC U11+. However, Edge Sense 2.0 now features double tap and hold functionality. Double tapping the frame allows users to create a mini screen. This feature functions as a back key or even as a new navigation bar. The functionality also allows users to hold on the frame to prevent it from rotating or dimming the screen. Squeezing the device pulls up the Edge Launcher — first seen on the HTC U11+ –or launches apps. It can also be used to perform in-app actions.

The U12+ features four cameras; two on the back and two on the front. The two on the rear feature 12-megapixel and 16-megapixel sensors, with one sporting an f/1.75 aperture and the other f/2.6. The phone also features optical zoom up to 2x and digital zoom up to 10x. The rear cameras feature OIS/EIS and include a dual LED flash.

Meanwhile, the device sports dual 8-megapixel selfie shooters with f/2.0 apertures. It supports a depth-of-field bokeh mode and has HTC’s own Face Unlock feature, too.

As for video recording, the phone can shoot 4K video at 60fps, slow motion at 1080p at 240fps and features ‘Sonic Zoom’ that lets users zoom in on a specific sound in the scene.

The U12+ continues to offer HTC’s ‘BoomSound,’ this time with a separated woofer and tweeter for improved clarity and power. The device also includes new HTC USonic earbuds with active noise cancellation.

Other specs that round out the phone include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage. The U12+ also comes with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and will be upgradable to Android P.
