HTC Has A Blockchain-powered Phone In The Works

HTC has announced that it has a blockchain-powered smartphone in the making. The phone will reportedly be named “Exodus”, and will come with features that are cryptocurrency-related.

Specifically, HTC will be giving the phone a universal wallet and hardware support for cryptocurrencies and decentralised apps. Regarding the former, the Exodus will support Bitcoin and Ethereum (for now), with support for other digital currencies to follow at a later date. Spearheading the Exodus initiative is Phil Chen, the founder of HTC Vive.

“Through Exodus, we are excited to be supporting underlying protocols such as Bitcoin, Lightning Networks, Ethereum, Dfinity, and more,” Chen said on the integration of blockchain applications with the phone’s hardware. “We would like to support the entire blockchain ecosystem, and in the next few months we’ll be announcing many more exciting partnerships together.”

HTC isn’t the first company to make the a blockchain-powered smartphone. That honour goes to Sirin Labs, who also has a smartphone in the works and codenamed “Finney”. The phone apparently comes with a built-in ‘cold storage’ wallet that Sirin Labs says is an offline system that is more secure but less convenient. Unlike Exodus, Finney can only store Ethereum for the moment.
