Battlefield V Will Ship Without Premium Passes; Providing New Maps And Content For Free

Electronic Arts is taking the Battlefield franchise in a bold new direction, and it’s one that people didn’t expect to happen. It turns out that the upcoming Battlefield V will be doing away with premium passes for additional DLC. Instead, allowing all players to experience the same content without having to pay extra.

Battlefield V takes players back to the start of the franchise, setting the game in World War 2 once again. However, developer DICE is saying that it wants to explore other settings in the era; and is avoiding the more traditional set pieces like the Normandy landings. Instead, players can expect to be thrown in behind the lines in the occupied Netherlands, or battle across the French countryside.

New game modes are being introduced as well, including an expansion to the single player “War Stories” mode that was first seen in Battlefield 1. Co-op missions called “Combined Arms” are being added; bringing smaller scale actions for players who would rather work together to complete objectives rather than engage in all out warfare.

Construction aspects are also being brought into the game. It’s not exactly being done like Fornite, although the announcement says that players will be able to build bunkers, sandbag walls for cover, and weapon emplacements.

Finally, it wouldn’t be EA if lootboxes weren’t involved somehow. That said, both EA and DICE are promising that these will only be cosmetics for character customisation. There is supposedly a character booster meant to be released later; but this is for people who are joining the game late to catch up with others.
