Accidents related to distracted driving on the rise in Canada: report

The number of distracted driving-related accidents in Canada has been on the rise between 2016 and 2018, according to a new study published by insurance company Aviva Canada.

Aviva investigated how many of the claims it received during that time were related to distracted driving.

Almost all of the regions in Canada saw a double-digit rise, but the biggest jump in distracted driving was in Alberta, where the amount of distracted driving-related accidents rose 58 percent.

The Atlantic region saw the smallest increase with only an 8 percent increase, while Canada’s most populous province, Ontario, rose 12 percent in that time.

The Canadian total was an average rise of 23 percent more distracted driving-related accidents.

“Despite increased penalties and awareness on this issue, too many Canadians are still driving distracted behind the wheel. The majority of these accidents are preventable – such as hitting stationary objects, rear-ending other vehicles and inattentive lane changes,” said Phil Gibson, chief underwriting officer at Aviva Canada in a press release.
